Worth knowing
Maxi Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Maxi built cruising yachts between 7 and 12 metres in Sweden, solid production boats of the seventies to the nineties, widespread in the Baltic and with a loyal following. The yard no longer produces under this name, the yachts sail on and hold steady prices.
With these yachts the age is not an obstacle, but it is an argument for the agreed value: the current market value of a forty year old Maxi lies far below the repair costs caused by laminate damage or an engine replacement. The second point is the standing rigging; after forty years it has either been renewed or is overdue. Material fatigue in the rig is wear, and a dismasting resulting from it is not covered.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is a forty year old yacht still insured with hull cover?
Yes. The year of construction goes into the premium, but does not rule out cover. What matters is an agreed value and a rig whose age you know.

For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
