Worth knowing
Amel; cover, cost and conditions
Amel of La Rochelle builds blue water yachts for cruising couples, with sheltered centre cockpits, ketch and sloop rigs, consistently laid out for single handed and two handed operation. The Super Maramu is a classic among circumnavigators and is still traded thirty years on.
Two points are decisive here. First: single handed sailing is covered with us, at no extra charge; in our long distance cruising survey one of seven providers excluded it in the base wording, although on Amel yachts it is the normal case. Second, the agreed value: on a thirty year old Super Maramu the market value lies far above what a scale of values based on the year of build would produce.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is single handed sailing covered?
Yes, at no extra charge. In our long distance cruising survey (as at 01.08.2026) one of seven providers excluded it in the base wording; on Amel yachts, which are laid out for two handed operation, that would be a real problem.

Series by Amel, with value and cover
Super Maramu / 54 (classic) is a sailing yacht from Amel (France), built from 1990 to 2012, and today changes hands at between €180,000 and €520,000.
Sharki / Maramu (classic) is a sailing yacht from Amel (France), built from 1980 to 1998, and today changes hands at between €88,000 and €225,000.
Amel 50 / 55 / 60 is a sailing yacht from Amel (France), built since 2005, and today changes hands at between €480,000 and €1,600,000.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
