When a ship is recorded under its own name it is as a rule a one off. That is the decisive point for insurance: there is no series from which a value could be read, and the fit out is individual. A survey and an agreed fixed value are not an option here but the basis of any dependable cover.

Frequent questions
My ship has no model designation, only a name. Is that a problem?
No. One offs are recorded through build documentation, an equipment list and a survey. From these an agreed fixed value is set that reflects the individual fit out and is not renegotiated after a loss.
From what size does the calculator no longer work?
From around 24 m we build the cover individually. Crew liability, tenders, changing berths and a higher liability limit then come into play, which a standard policy does not cover.

A powerboat licence (inland or coastal) is required from 15 hp (11.03 kW).
Registration

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
