Worth knowing
29er und 49er; cover, cost and conditions
The 29er and the 49er are skiffs, dinghies with trapeze, gennaker and racks, built for high speeds and frequent capsizes. The 49er was an Olympic class from 2000 to 2024, and the 49erFX is the women's class. For insurance purposes the design is decisive: these boats are sailed at the limit, capsizing is part of normal operation, and rig damage is no exception.
The hull is optimised for weight and the rig for performance, and both mean that damage occurs more often and repairs are more demanding than on a cruising dinghy. A hull repair on a skiff requires a laminate build-up to class rules so that weight and shape are correct. When you report a claim, state that it is a class boat; the repair is then carried out by a specialist yard.
For these classes, racing is the purpose of the boat. Without racing cover practically every relevant loss is excluded: a collision at a course mark, a broken mast in a gust, damage while righting the boat after a capsize. The inclusion costs an additional premium and, on a skiff, is not an extra but the condition for the policy making any sense at all.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is capsizing a claim?
The capsize itself is not, since on a skiff it is part of normal operation. Consequential damage to the rig or hull while righting the boat is covered under full hull cover with racing cover included.
Why is racing cover essential here?
Because on a skiff practically every relevant loss happens during a race. Without that inclusion the policy is worth little.

Series by 29er / 49er, with value and cover
29erXX is a sailing dinghy from 29er / 49er, built from 2006 to 2020, and today changes hands at between €10,000 and €22,000.
29er Skiff is a sailing dinghy from 29er / 49er, built since 1998, and today changes hands at between €8,000 and €18,000.
49er und 49erFX is a sailing dinghy from 29er / 49er, built since 1996, and today changes hands at between €18,000 and €38,000.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
Dinghies are mostly trailed and stored ashore, and that is where most damage happens: rigging, strapping down and winter storage.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repairs are predictable. Still, set the value at replacement cost, including sails, rigging or gear you bought later.
