Worth knowing
420er und 470er; cover, cost and conditions
The 420 and the 470 are the two classic two-person racing dinghies, the 420 as a youth and training boat, the 470 as an Olympic class until 2024. Both are one-design classes with strict class rules, and these rules are the point that matters for insurance: what may be altered on the boat is laid down, and the value of a boat depends on its conformity with the class.
For hull insurance this means that a repair cannot be carried out in any way you like. Damage to the hull of a boat that requires a measurement certificate has to be made good so that weight and shape stay within tolerance, otherwise the boat loses its right to start and with it a considerable part of its value. When you report a claim, state that the boat is a class boat; the repair is then handled by a yard that knows the rules.
Racing is the second point, and with these boats it is the normal case. Races are not included in standard hull insurance, and anyone insuring a 420 or a 470 needs the racing extension in practically every case. It then also covers what typically happens during a race: collisions at the mark, rig damage in gusts, damage while capsizing and righting the boat.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Does a repair have to comply with the class rules?
With boats that require a measurement certificate, yes. A repair outside the tolerance costs you the right to start, so when you report a claim, state that it is a class boat.
Do I need the racing extension?
With these classes, in practically every case. Without it, damage during a race is not covered, and with a racing boat that is the most likely event.

Series by 420er / 470er, with value and cover
420er racing is a sailing dinghy from 420er / 470er, built since 1990, and today changes hands at between €5,000 and €16,000.
420er two-handed dinghy is a sailing dinghy from 420er / 470er, built since 1960, and today changes hands at between €3,000 and €12,000.
470er Olympic dinghy is a sailing dinghy from 420er / 470er, built since 1963, and today changes hands at between €8,000 and €25,000.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repairs are predictable. Still, set the value at replacement cost, including sails, rigging or gear you bought later.
Dinghies are mostly trailed and stored ashore, and that is where most damage happens: rigging, strapping down and winter storage.
