Worth knowing
Burmester (classics); cover, cost and conditions
Burmester in Bremen built wooden yachts in the first half of the twentieth century that today rank among the sought-after German classics. A preserved Burmester yacht is a cultural asset: its value comes from originality, provenance and state of preservation, and with well documented boats it is considerable.
For the insurance this means: an agreed value on the basis of a current valuation report, a wood surcharge from a sum insured of 20,000 euros, and a fresh valuation after every stage of restoration. What cannot be insured is ageing; movement in the seams, cracks in the varnish and drying damage from winter storage are wear and tear. Insurable are storm, hail, fire, theft, collision and transport, and with a wooden yacht craning is the riskiest moment of the year.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
How often should the valuation report be renewed?
After every major stage of restoration and otherwise every few years. With classics the value changes with the condition, not with the age.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
