Catana Catamarans; cover, cost and conditions
Catana has been building fast cruising catamarans with retractable daggerboards instead of a fixed keel since the eighties, a form of construction that brings advantages and a claims profile of its own. The daggerboards allow a shallow draught and therefore anchorages that are closed to other catamarans; but they are also a moving component within the hull. A jammed daggerboard, or one twisted in its case after a grounding, is a typical Catana claim, and the case itself should be inspected whenever a boat changes hands.
In insurance terms the older build years are the more interesting part of the fleet. Catanas from the nineties are well built, but they are now thirty years old: rig, saildrives, fittings and wiring are wear parts by then, and no hull insurance replaces wear. What it does replace is consequential damage; if an aged shroud breaks and damages the deck, we pay for the deck damage. That is why a rig survey is worth more than any premium comparison on an older catamaran.
On value the same applies to Catana as to all multihulls: the agreed value is the decisive part of the contract. On a well kept Catana the depreciated market value and the replacement value are far apart, because the market for fast cruising catamarans is narrow and prices hold up well. With an agreed value the recorded amount is paid in the event of a claim; without one, a reduced market value.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Are the daggerboards of my Catana covered?
Yes, as a fixed component of the hull under hull insurance. Damage caused by grounding is covered under full hull cover; pure wear on the mechanism is not.
Is hull insurance worthwhile on a thirty year old Catana?
As a rule yes, because the market value of these boats remains high. Have the value set by a surveyor, then the real replacement value is stated in the contract in the event of a claim.

Cruising range
The agreed cruising range is stated in the policy and can be extended at any time.
Weather
Check wind force in Beaufort and wind direction before casting off, and allow for gusts.
General guidance, not a complete account; what governs are the rules of the waters you are on and your boat’s manual. Current wind force and direction for your waters are shown on the Home.

For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part, and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
