Cobalt Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Cobalt builds bowriders and sports boats between 6 and 9 metres in Kansas in the upper price segment, known for build quality and elaborate interiors with upholstery, teak surfaces and integrated galley modules. This equipment is the block of value that sets Cobalt apart from simpler bowriders, and in cases of hail, vandalism and water damage it is the most sensitive area.
Hail damage is a case that is regularly underestimated with open boats. A summer thunderstorm over a boat with an open cockpit hits upholstery, instruments and teak surfaces directly, and the boat cover protects against rain, not against hailstones. Hail is already covered under the limited hull cover. Anyone who keeps the boat outdoors should reflect the value of the upholstery and the equipment in the sum, not only the hull.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is hail damage to upholstery and cockpit covered?
Yes, hail is already included in the limited hull cover. What matters is that the value of the equipment is reflected in the sum insured; with high-quality bowriders that is a considerable amount.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
