Worth knowing
Douglas Marine Corporation; cover, cost and conditions
Douglas Marine Corporation is listed with 21 models between 5 and 16.7 m, nineteen of them power catamarans and two motorboats. The types carry the Skater name, from the Skater 28 Race Pleasure through the 30, the 40 Super Sport and the 46 to the Skater 50 Race Pleasure. The three digit series adds the 308, 318, 368, 388, 426, 438 and 588. Production has run since 2002.
Twin hull catamarans with strong engines need a precise description of propulsion and use, because racing is rated differently from a weekend outing. On the smaller units around five metres third party liability is the base and trailer transport belongs with it. On the larger ones an agreed value pays off, since build years reach back to 2002 and a market value rarely does justice to how these boats are built.
NAMMERT insures Douglas Marine regardless of build year and place of purchase, including imports from overseas. If the boat is run at events, that should be stated in the application. You can work out the premium in the online calculator in five minutes.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Are racing events covered?
Racing is a separate category of use and has to be declared. For pure leisure and cruising the standard scope applies.
How is a Skater 588 of 16.7 m rated?
Through length, value, propulsion and cruising area. At this size berth and storage also belong in the application, because the boat is no longer simply moved on a trailer.

As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part, and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
