Worth knowing
Finnmaster; cover, cost and conditions
Finnmaster builds bowriders, console boats and pilothouse boats in Finland and, with the Husky range, runs its own aluminium line. The boats are matched to Yamaha outboards and are trailered almost throughout. Between GRP and aluminium there is a difference in insurance terms that is often overlooked: aluminium dents, GRP breaks. A dent in an aluminium hull can be repaired, but cracking along weld seams after several impacts hardly can.
With aluminium boats, electrolysis is an additional issue. A shore power device connected incorrectly or a missing sacrificial anode eats away the hull at the drive and at the through-hull fittings within a single season. Corrosion damage arising from neglected anode maintenance is not covered, as it counts as wear and tear. Check the anodes every year, and have an isolating transformer or a galvanic isolator fitted for the shore power connection if you lie in salt water.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is electrolysis on an aluminium hull insured?
No, corrosion and electrolysis count as wear and tear if anode maintenance has been neglected. An annual anode check and a galvanic isolator on the shore power connection are the effective precaution.

Series by Finnmaster, with value and cover
Husky R6 / R7 is a motorboat from Finnmaster, built since 2015, and today changes hands at between €35,000 and €120,000.
Husky T6 / T8 is a motorboat from Finnmaster, built since 2015, and today changes hands at between €45,000 and €160,000.
Finnmaster 55 / 62 Bow Rider is a motorboat from Finnmaster, built from 2005 to 2020, and today changes hands at between €20,000 and €70,000.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
