Worth knowing
Knysna Yacht Company; cover, cost and conditions
Cabin catamarans define the picture at the Knysna Yacht Company: the Knysna 480 from 2008 to 2015 and the 500SE from 2014 to 2024. Nothing more is documented. For multihulls the same policy structure applies as elsewhere, beginning with third-party liability and supplemented by limited hull cover or full hull cover.
On longer trips proof of insurance is requested in the harbour, sometimes in the local language. NAMMERT issues the international certificate of insurance automatically in ten languages. You therefore carry the proof on board without having to request it beforehand.
Full hull cover covers collision, grounding, vandalism and theft of parts including the outboard, with no time window and no night clause. Compensation is paid at the agreed value with no deduction for depreciation. Up to a sum insured of 2.5 million euros you take out the policy online.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is the proof for foreign harbours issued automatically?
Yes, the international certificate of insurance comes automatically in ten languages. A separate request before the trip is not necessary for this.
Does the cover also apply on night passages?
Yes. The hull cover contains no time window and no night clause. Collision and grounding are covered under full hull cover regardless of the time of day.

Series by Knysna Yacht Company, build years and cover
500SE is a cabin catamaran from Knysna Yacht Company, built from 2014 to 2024.
Knysna 480 is a cabin catamaran from Knysna Yacht Company, built from 2008 to 2015.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part, and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
