Respo builds boat trailers in Estonia that are widespread in the Baltic region and are increasingly sold in Germany as well, galvanised frames designed for saltwater use. The galvanising is the practical advantage: trailers used on the coast corrode faster than inland, and a galvanised frame lasts considerably longer.
In our boat policy the trailer is included at no extra premium if it is stated in the application, with manufacturer, payload and chassis number. On trailers that are launched regularly the braking system is the point of wear: overrun brakes in contact with saltwater need an annual check. Wear and failure to maintain are not covered.
For road use the trailer remains a vehicle requiring registration and a periodic technical inspection. The motor third-party liability of the towing vehicle covers it in traffic, our boat policy covers it as a material asset and during transport of the boat. When launching on the Baltic, remember to rinse it after every trip; fresh water over the frame, bearings and brakes costs five minutes and extends the service life by years.

Is a galvanised trailer worthwhile on the coast?
Clearly. Contact with saltwater during launching is the main cause of corrosion; a galvanised frame lasts considerably longer.
What should be observed when launching?
Rinse with fresh water after every trip: frame, wheel bearings and brakes. Wear resulting from contact with saltwater is not insured.
