Worth knowing
Winner Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
In the Netherlands, Winner builds racing and cruising yachts from eight to thirteen metres, and for decades also the Optimist junior dinghy. Winner boats are at home on inland waters and on race courses, and precisely on that hangs the most important contractual question: racing use is restricted with many providers, whereas with us club races are included from the Basis-Plus tariff upwards.
The classic 750 and 900 date from the years 1975 to 1995. Boats of this age are frequently insured below their value because the current market value is taken as the yardstick. The correct figure is the replacement value, and that includes retrofitted sails, electronics and a new rig.
For junior dinghies such as the Optimist a separate calculation applies: the boats are inexpensive, the liability question is not. A child who damages another boat with the dinghy triggers the same liability case as an adult. Third-party liability cover is therefore the basis even on the smallest boat.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is a junior dinghy such as the Optimist included in the cover?
It is insured as a boat in its own right, usually through third-party liability cover. The premium is low, the limit of indemnity the same as for large boats.
Does the policy cover races?
Club races from the Basis-Plus tariff upwards. For races with scoring status and for rig damage during a race, let us know when taking out the policy.
The cover that fits

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
Dinghies are mostly trailed and stored ashore, and that is where most damage happens: rigging, strapping down and winter storage.
