A medical laboratory in Germany works out of sight, yet every treatment depends on its results. A swapped sample, a wrong report or a broken analyser affects patients and the practices that send you samples. Whether you run a laboratory practice, a medical care centre (MVZ) or a specialist lab, this page explains which insurance is required, which makes sense and what it costs.
Who pays if a swapped result leads to the wrong treatment?
The patient can claim damages, and that is what professional liability is for. For panel doctors and MVZs § 95e SGB V sets minimum sums; in practice higher limits are common. Make sure every doctor, employed specialist and area of work in your laboratory is named in the policy.
What goes wrong in this trade
01
Wrong result
Swapped samples, a transcription error or an unnoticed device fault lead to treatment errors with large damages claims.
02
Analysers
Analyser lines and sequencers often cost six figures. Water, power surges or an operating error take them out.
03
Downtime
If a key device fails, practices send samples elsewhere. Income stops while staff and leasing costs continue.
04
Health data
Labs hold large volumes of results. An attack encrypts data, stops result delivery and triggers reporting duties.
05
Samples in transit
Courier runs between practices and the lab: an accident, heat or loss makes samples useless.
06
Infections in the team
Needlestick injuries and contact with pathogens are typical lab accidents.

Practical tips from your broker
Check that your professional liability meets the minimums in § 95e SGB V and keep the certificate ready.
Have every area of work, including specialist testing and samples from other practices, named in the policy.
Insure analysers at replacement value, including leased and rented devices.
Agree business interruption cover after equipment damage, not just after fire.
Include spoiled reagents and samples after a cooling failure.
Combine cyber insurance with separate backups so results can be restored quickly.

Frequently asked questions
Questions and answers
Which insurance is compulsory for a medical laboratory?
Under § 95e SGB V, panel doctors need professional liability of at least €3 million per claim;
MVZs and practices with employed doctors at least €5 million.
What happens if the cover lapses?
Under § 95e SGB V the admissions committee suspends the licence if proof is not provided in time.
If the suspension lasts more than two years, the licence is withdrawn.
How much does insurance for a lab cost?
From our quoting work, a laboratory practice with its own analysers pays about €5,000 to €13,000 a
year for professional liability, electronics and contents.
Are analysers covered by contents insurance?
Against fire, water and burglary, yes.
Operating errors, short circuits and power surges need electronics insurance.
Do I need a permit to work with pathogens?
In principle yes, under § 44 IfSG.
§ 45 IfSG exempts only narrow orientating diagnostics by doctors for their own patients in their
own practice.
Is cyber insurance worth it for a lab?
Labs hold a lot of health data and send results electronically.
An attack stops work and must be reported, so cover makes particular sense here.
