Outboard thieves strike again at Marina Wieltsee in Germany

Thieves strike again at Marina Wieltsee in Weyhe, Germany: motorboats taken from their berths, outboards stripped off, boats left drifting on the river Weser. It is not the first case there this autumn.

Between 6 pm on 7 October 2026 and 9 pm on 8 October, unknown thieves took a motor yacht from its berth at Marina Wieltsee in Weyhe, Lower Saxony. They then removed both outboard engines, took them away and left the boat drifting on the river Weser, according to the Diepholz police (Polizeiinspektion Diepholz).

Officers found a second boat drifting nearby on the Weser, its outboard motor also gone. Initial findings suggest it too had been moored at Marina Wieltsee. The police in Weyhe are asking anyone who saw suspicious people or vehicles to call +49 421 80660.

The pattern is familiar. In mid September two motorboats were taken from the same marina in the same way, stripped of their outboards and left on the Weser. The local paper Weser-Kurier and the sailing magazine YACHT both report a series of thefts and vandalism around the Wieltsee lake since August. Whether the cases are linked remains open.

The lesson for owners anywhere: the thieves are after the engine, not the boat. They take the boat away from its berth first and strip the outboard later, out of sight of the jetty.

What this means for owners

If your outboard stays on the boat at a lake or river berth, fit a locking bolt or a comparable anti-theft device, or take the engine into a locked building over winter. Note the serial number and keep photos. Report a theft at once to the police and to the marina office. And ask your insurer two questions before it happens: whether the theft of parts attached to the boat, such as an outboard, is part of your contract, and which kind of security they expect for the engine.
