Does comprehensive car insurance pay for engine or gearbox damage in Germany?
In short
Usually not. In Germany comprehensive car insurance (Vollkasko) only pays for engine or gearbox damage when an outside event caused it, such as an accident, fire or flood. Wear and tear, material fatigue, operating errors and the wrong fuel are excluded. A rebuilt replacement engine costs around EUR 5,000 fitted, which you then pay yourself or claim under the seller's warranty.
Published guide prices for repairing engine damage in Germany.
Example
Typical range
Engine reconditioning, depending on size
from about EUR 1,500
Rebuilt replacement engine, fitted
around EUR 5,000
New engine from the manufacturer
often over EUR 10,000
Removing and fitting the engine
at least EUR 1,000
Garage prices from published guides, as of October 2026, varying strongly by model and engine.
The figures in the worked example are guide values from quoting practice.
Worked example
Eight year old compact car, engine failure after a timing chain snapped
The engine no longer runs, no accident was involved. This is how the bill looks.
Rebuilt replacement engine, fitted
about EUR 5,000
Payment from comprehensive cover
EUR 0, wear is excluded
Goodwill from the manufacturer for a known weak point
possible, amount negotiable
Value of the car with engine damage
about EUR 1,500
Comprehensive cover pays nothing. Without goodwill, the repair costs more than half the car's value, so selling it as it is may make more sense.
Why comprehensive cover rarely pays for a broken engine
Comprehensive cover pays for damage from an accident, meaning an event that hits the car suddenly from outside with mechanical force. An engine that fails because of low oil, wear or a snapped timing chain is damaged from the inside. Under the policy terms that is not an accident.
The German model terms expressly exclude damage caused only by operating the car, such as wrong operation or the wrong fuel, and damage from material fatigue, overstraining or wear. A gearbox ruined by rough gear changes falls under the same rule.
Cause
Comprehensive cover pays?
Accident damages the engine or gearbox
yes, minus your deductible
Fire or explosion in the engine bay
yes, already under partial cover (Teilkasko)
Short circuit in the wiring
only the cables, not the follow-on damage
Marten bite with damage to the engine
only with extended marten cover in the policy
Wear, low oil, timing chain
no
Wrong fuel
no, unless the policy has a special add-on
When comprehensive cover does pay
If an accident rips open the oil sump and the engine runs dry, the engine damage is a result of the accident and comprehensive cover pays. Stop straight after the impact, otherwise the insurer may say you caused the extra damage by driving on.
Fire, explosion, hail, storm and flooding are covered by partial cover. If you drive into deep water and the engine sucks it in, the insurer may argue a driving error rather than flooding. Some policies go further than the model terms and pay follow-on damage after a marten bite up to a limit.
Who else might pay for the engine
If you bought the car from a dealer, the dealer is liable for defects that already existed at handover. The period is two years. For used cars it can be cut to one year, but only if this was expressly and separately agreed in the contract.
Manufacturer and used car guarantees (Garantie) have their own terms, often with mileage limits and service conditions. Manufacturers sometimes help with known weak points even after the guarantee has ended. Ask before the garage replaces the engine.
What an engine repair costs in Germany
Reconditioning an engine starts at about EUR 1,500, a rebuilt replacement engine costs around EUR 5,000 fitted. A brand new engine from the manufacturer is quickly over EUR 10,000. Gearbox damage can often be repaired more cheaply than replacing the whole unit.
On older cars the repair often costs more than the car is worth. Selling it with the defect can then be the better choice. Get at least two quotes, independent engine specialists are often much cheaper than the brand dealer.
When you do not need comprehensive cover for this
Taking out comprehensive cover only because you fear engine failure means paying for protection you do not get. Protection against wear is only available through a guarantee or repair cost insurance, which has its own limits.
Coming from the UK or US, you may know mechanical breakdown insurance. In Germany this is sold separately, often when you buy a used car, and is not part of standard car insurance.
Step by step
Switch the engine off immediately when warning lights come on.
Have the car towed, do not drive on.
Check whether an accident, fire, storm or marten bite could be the cause and, if so, tell your insurer.
If wear is the cause, ask the dealer and manufacturer about liability, guarantee or goodwill.
Get two quotes and compare them with the car's value.
Checklist
Cause of the engine damage confirmed in writing by the garage
Purchase date and liability period checked
Guarantee papers and service records at hand
Policy checked for marten follow-on damage and wrong fuel
Repair cost compared with the replacement value
Common mistakes
Driving on after an accident with oil loss
Replacing the engine before asking the dealer or manufacturer
Buying comprehensive cover only out of fear of engine failure
Scrapping the broken engine before the cause is clear
Questions and answers
Frequently asked
Does partial cover (Teilkasko) pay for engine damage?
Only after events it covers, such as fire, explosion, storm or a short circuit in the wiring.
For a short circuit it pays the cables only, not the engine.
Does comprehensive cover pay for gearbox damage?
Only if an accident or another insured event caused it.
A gearbox failing from wear or rough use is not covered.
What about water in the engine after a flood?
Flooding is covered by partial cover.
If you knowingly drive through deep water, the insurer may cut the payment for a driving error.
Is putting the wrong fuel in covered?
Not under the model terms, it counts as operating damage.
Some policies sell an add-on for it.
Does breakdown cover (Schutzbrief) help?
It pays for roadside help and towing, not for repairing the engine.
