What happens to dog liability insurance in Germany when the dog dies?

In short

When the dog dies, there is nothing left to insure and the dog liability insurance (Hundehaftpflicht) ends. Under section 80 of the German Insurance Contract Act (VVG), the insurer may only keep the premium up to the day it learns of the death. With a EUR 60 annual premium and notice after four months, about EUR 40 comes back. Incidents from while the dog was alive stay covered.

What happens to dog liability insurance in Germany when the dog dies?

What it costs

What you get back depends on the annual premium and the day you report the death. Premium ranges from published German comparisons.

ExampleTypical range
Basic tariff with excessfrom about EUR 35 a year
Standard tariff without excess, EUR 10 million coverabout EUR 50 to 70 a year
Strong tariffabout EUR 100 to 150 a year
Refund on EUR 60 premium, notice after 4 of 12 monthsabout EUR 40

Guide values, October 2026.

The refund is our own rough calculation under section 80 VVG;

how the insurer calculates to the day is set out in its conditions.

Worked example

Labrador dies in April, EUR 60 annual premium

The insurance year starts on 1 January and the premium was paid in full in January.

Death of the dog20 April
Notice to the insurer by email30 April
Premium the insurer keepsJanuary to April, about EUR 20
Refund to youabout EUR 40
Bite on 10 April, claimed in Junestill covered

Reporting only in October would leave you with about EUR 10. The April bite is covered either way.

Why dog liability insurance ends with the dog

Dog liability insurance covers your liability as the keeper of one specific dog. Once the dog dies, that risk is gone. German law treats this as the insured interest falling away (Wegfall des versicherten Interesses) in section 80 VVG. You do not need to give notice with a deadline.

What matters for your money is the day the insurer learns of the death. It may keep the premium up to that day and must refund the rest. The quicker you report the death of your dog, the more you get back.

What happens to a bite or accident before the death

The model conditions of the German insurance association (GDV) cover a damaging event (Schadenereignis) that happened during the term of the contract. If your dog knocked a cyclist off their bike in February and dies in March, the insurer still handles the claim, even if the cyclist only gets in touch in summer.

So report any incident from before the dog died, even after the contract has ended. Keep your policy and letters for at least three years, because damages claims in Germany usually become time-barred after three years under section 195 of the Civil Code (BGB).

A new dog: switch the policy or take out a new one

Whether the contract can move over to a new dog depends on the insurer's conditions. Ask before you cancel. In Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia every dog must be insured, so the new dog needs cover from the day it moves in.

Your situationWhat happens to the dog liability insurance
Dog died, no new dog plannedreport the death, contract ends, part of the premium refunded
New dog in the next weeksask about switching before you cancel
Several dogs on one contractremove only the dog that died, premium drops
Incident shortly before the deathreport it anyway, it stays covered

What else to sort out when the dog dies

Pet health insurance or surgery cover is a separate contract and must be told separately, or the premiums keep running. The dog tax (Hundesteuer) is handled by your town, not by the insurer, so deregister the dog there as well.

Step by step

  1. Report the death with the date in text form and quote your policy number.
  2. Ask for written confirmation that the contract has ended and a premium statement.
  3. Report any incident from before the death at the same time.
  4. Cancel pet health insurance and dog tax separately.
  5. For a new dog, ask about switching the contract before you cancel.

Checklist

  • Date of death noted, ideally confirmed by the vet
  • Notice sent to the dog liability insurer, proof kept
  • Premium refund received
  • Policy documents kept for at least three years
  • New dog insured from day one

Common mistakes

  • Waiting for the next premium invoice before reporting the death
  • Sending an ordinary notice with three months' deadline although the contract ends at once
  • Not reporting a recent incident because the contract is over
  • Leaving a new dog uninsured in a state where cover is compulsory

The new keeper needs their own dog liability insurance.

Does my personal liability insurance cover the new dog?
