Which insurance do clergy and church employees in Germany need?
In short
Which insurance do clergy and church employees in Germany need? It depends on the employment. Clergy with a pension on civil servant principles need private health insurance alongside state style aid (Beihilfe) and usually service incapacity cover. Church group liability cover often already covers duty, in the Rhineland with EUR 10 million. Church employees insure like other employees.

Clergy: pension like civil servants
Pastors of the major churches are usually in a public law service relationship. If church law secures a pension for reduced earning capacity and old age, section 5 SGB VI exempts them from statutory pension insurance. In health insurance, clergy are exempt if, like civil servants, they are entitled to continued pay and Beihilfe.
For clergy this means: medical costs via Beihilfe plus a private top up plan, income in case of incapacity via the church pension. When that pension starts and whether there is a waiting period like for state civil servants is set by your church's service and pension law. Ask before ordination.
Church employees: employees with a church employer
Parish assistants, church musicians, sextons, deacons on employment contracts and staff in church nurseries are ordinary employees. They have statutory health, pension and accident insurance. The priorities of other employees apply: occupational disability first, then personal liability.

Liability in parish work: what the group policy covers
Many regional churches and dioceses have group contracts. In the Rhineland, the liability group policy includes the personal liability of all full time, part time and volunteer staff from their duties, with EUR 10 million flat for bodily injury and property damage. Loss of third party keys on duty is covered up to EUR 52,000 per claim.
Read your church's insurance leaflet. If it covers duty like this, clergy and church employees need no separate official liability, only personal liability for private life. If key loss is missing or the sum is low, an add-on costs about EUR 19 to 33 a year.
Priorities for clergy
First private health insurance alongside Beihilfe, ideally from the start of training. Then service incapacity cover for the years when the church pension is still low. Then personal liability. Clergy with continued pay do not need daily sick pay.
What clergy and church employees usually do not need
Own professional liability for pastoral care and services is usually unnecessary if the group policy applies. Expensive accident insurance does not replace cover for incapacity.
