Worth knowing
Kelt / Gib’Sea; cover, cost and conditions
Kelt and Gib’Sea are French series production yards from the seventies to the two thousands, Kelt with small trailerable yachts between 5.5 and 9 metres, Gib’Sea with cruising yachts between 8 and 13 metres. Both brands are history, and their boats form part of the basic stock of European cruising under sail.
With small trailerable yachts such as the Kelts, transport is a main risk: transports by suitable means of transport are covered, the trailer belongs in the sum with a value of its own, and most damage happens when lowering the mast. With the larger Gib’Sea it is the age: rig, keel bolts and osmosis are matters of wear and are not covered, and a pre-purchase survey is the most sensible investment.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is damage while lowering the mast covered?
Yes, rigging and unrigging are expressly included, and with trailerable yachts this is one of the most frequent moments of damage.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
