Calculating charging time, recharging the battery under power
Divide the capacity you need to put back by the charging current; with lead-acid, add around twenty per cent for losses.

In theory, a two-hundred-amp-hour bank that is half discharged needs a good three hours at a charging current of thirty amps. In practice, lead-acid only accepts the full current up to about eighty per cent state of charge, and after that it takes considerably longer. Anyone who wants a full charge every day needs either more current or more time under power.
Running the engine purely to charge is expensive and does the engine no good, because it never reaches operating temperature. Solar panels or a shore-power charger are the better solution.
As far as the insurance is concerned, what matters is that the installation is done properly. Chargers, inverters and batteries are part of the equipment and have to be allowed for in the sum insured. With lithium, the system has to be declared on the proposal form; battery, charging equipment, animal bite damage and short circuit are included in our electric-drive tariff.
