Breaking down onboard consumption, what each device draws

Refrigeration, navigation and lighting together make up the continuous load, times twenty-four hours, divided by twelve volts.

The fridge is almost always the biggest item, because it cycles around the clock. Navigation and autopilot only come in when you are under way, lighting only in the evening. Break your consumption down and you usually find one device that draws more than all the others put together.

The daily consumption sets the size of the battery bank: with lead acid you need twice as much, because only half of it is usable. And that raises the question of how it is recharged, by alternator, solar or shore power.

The entire electrical installation counts as equipment and has to be included in the sum insured. Lithium also has to be declared: the battery and the charging system must be listed on the application, because they behave differently from lead acid in a fire.
