Worth knowing
Etap Yachting; cover, cost and conditions
Etap built sailing yachts between 6 and 11 metres in Belgium until 2011, with one special feature: a double hull with a foam-filled space in between, which makes the yachts unsinkable. Even with the hull fully flooded they stay afloat. For the insurance that is a real risk advantage, as total loss by sinking is practically ruled out.
What remains are collision, grounding, rig damage, theft and fire. And one point that counts with foam-filled hulls: a repair to the sandwich is more involved than to single-skin laminate, because the foam layer is affected as well and cannot simply be laminated over. That argues for an agreed value at replacement level and not at residual value, since the brand no longer exists and yard-specific parts come from the used market.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Are unsinkable yachts cheaper to insure?
The absence of the sinking risk is factored into the risk assessment. Repairs to the foam-filled sandwich hull are, in return, more involved than to single-skin laminate.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
