Worth knowing
Alden; cover, cost and conditions
Alden goes back to the design office of John G. Alden in Boston and stands for classic schooners and cruising yachts. Many of these vessels date from the years between 1920 and 1990 and are built in wood. For the insurance this is the decisive point: with a wooden hull the standard of care matters more than the year of construction.
A vessel that has been refitted several times is insurable, but the documentation determines the level of the sum. Please enclose refit invoices, a current survey and photographs of the hull. Without this evidence no reliable value can be agreed for a hundred-year-old schooner, and in the event of a claim that is exactly what is disputed.
Classic yachts of this size, twelve to twenty metres, often lie ashore during the winter season and are looked after by a yard. With us the cover continues in winter storage, and damage during craning or in transit is included. Let us know the storage location so that it is stated in the contract.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Does NAMMERT insure wooden yachts such as an Alden?
Yes. The building material is not an exclusion with us. With wooden hulls we look at the condition, and a survey from recent years speeds up underwriting.
How is a refitted vessel valued?
By the replacement value in today's market, evidenced by a survey and refit invoices. The original purchase price plays no part.

Series by Alden, with value and cover
Alden Schoner und Ketsch 12 to 20 m is a sailing yacht from Alden (the USA), built from 1920 to 1990, and today changes hands at between €90,000 and €590,000.
Alden 44 / 50 is a sailing yacht from Alden (the USA), built from 1970 to 2000, and today changes hands at between €90,000 and €290,000.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
