For insurance the wide span matters most: a six metre boat and a yacht of more than forty metres carry completely different risks. Value and cruising area therefore belong in the application, because cover and deductible are built on them. For the older build years from the 1990s and 2000s an agreed value works better than actual cash value, so there is no argument about depreciation after a loss.

What this means for the cover

For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.

On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
