Worth knowing
Classic wooden boats; cover, cost and conditions
Classic wooden yachts, yawls, ketches, cutters and skerry cruisers from the first half of the twentieth century, are cultural heritage on the water and are maintained by their owners over decades. Their value comes from originality, provenance and state of preservation, not from usability. The logic of depreciated value leads nowhere here.
We insure wooden hulls with a surcharge from a sum insured of 20,000 euros, and a current valuation report is the basis of the agreed value. What cannot be insured is ageing itself: movement of the seams, cracks in the varnish and drying damage from winter storage are wear and tear. What can be insured are damage events, storm, hail, fire, theft, collision, transport. With a wooden yacht, craning and transport are the riskiest moment of the year.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
