Worth knowing
Spirit Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Spirit Yachts in Ipswich builds sailing yachts between 13 and 34 metres in wood-epoxy, classically drawn yachts in modern cold-moulded construction, with the ambition of combining the lines of the thirties with today's performance. These are yachts that look like classics and sail like modern boats.
With us wood-epoxy counts as wooden construction: a surcharge from a sum insured of 20,000 €, a valuation report as the basis of the agreed value. The advantage of cold-moulded construction is durability, the epoxy encloses the wood, seam movement and drying damage do not occur. The sensitive point is the coating: damage that reaches into the wood has to be sealed immediately. That is maintenance, not an insurance claim.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is wood-epoxy more durable than traditional wooden construction?
Yes, the epoxy encloses the wood, seam movement and drying damage do not occur. In insurance terms it nevertheless counts as wooden construction with a surcharge from 20,000 €.

Spirit P40 / DH63 is a motorboat from Spirit Yachts (the United Kingdom), built since 2015, and today changes hands at between €420,000 and €890,000.

As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
