Carver Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Carver of Wisconsin builds flybridge and aft cabin yachts with a great deal of interior volume. The large superstructure is the reason why these boats need to be covered with particular care in winter storage: water that enters through windows and sliding hatches leads to moisture damage in the wooden interior, and moisture is a gradual process, not a sudden event. Hull insurance does not pay for anything gradual.
For Carver yachts with petrol engines the rule of engine room ventilation applies: run the blower before every start. Fire and deflagration in the engine room are the most severe damage of all on petrol boats; they are covered under limited hull cover and full hull cover, and they can be prevented with three minutes of patience. A maintenance-free fire extinguisher on board is part of the required equipment in any case.
On the larger model ranges the values are in the six-figure region. That puts the question of the limit of indemnity in third-party liability in a new light: ten million euros is the entry level, fifty million costs little more and covers the only case with no natural upper limit, personal injury. On a yacht with eight guests on board that is not an academic consideration.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is moisture in the interior joinery insured?
Only if it is the consequence of a covered event, such as storm damage to a window. Water entering gradually through leaking seals is wear and tear and is not insured.
What limit of indemnity do you recommend for a flybridge yacht?
Fifty million euros. The additional cost compared with ten million is small, and with personal injury there is no upper limit at which a loss limits itself.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
