Worth knowing
Princess Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Princess Yachts of Plymouth builds motor yachts from twelve to over forty metres by hand in Britain, with a high proportion of bespoke work. That is precisely the difference from a series yard in insurance terms: where the fit-out is individual, the documentation determines the amount of the settlement.
Submit the equipment list, refit records and invoices, and have the agreed value based on them. On yachts with a custom-made interior, special paintwork or retrofitted navigation equipment, the replacement value is regularly well above what a valuation by year of construction produces. In the Premium tariff the agreed value is unlimited and can be adjusted at any time; adjust it after every refit.
For yachts berthed in the Mediterranean the following applies: the cruising range must cover the location, and the compulsory cover requirements of the bordering states must be met; Italy requires 6,450,000 euros for personal injury and 1,300,000 euros for property damage. Our third-party liability covers worldwide with 10, 25 or 50 million euros; in Premium the chartered yacht is included, so a separate skipper liability policy is not needed.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
How is a Princess with special equipment valued?
Through the agreed value based on the equipment list and invoices. Without these records the calculation is made by year of construction, and for individually fitted yachts that is regularly too low.
Is the tender covered?
It can be included, but it is not automatically covered. As a dinghy the cover applies in connection with the mother yacht within the agreed radius.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
