Worth knowing
Fairline Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Fairline builds motor yachts between 11 and 20 metres in England, Targa as the sporty open, Squadron with a flybridge, Phantom as a sedan. These are yachts with solid wood interiors and elaborate onboard systems: air conditioning, generator, stabilisers, bow thruster. This equipment is the block of value that is regularly set too low in the sum insured, and on a 15 metre yacht it easily accounts for a quarter of the value.
On yachts of this size the generator is the most frequent cause of fire and water damage at the same time: exhaust routing through the hull, seawater cooling, fuel line. A defective impeller lets the generator overheat, a burst exhaust hose carries water into the engine room. Both are covered by full hull cover if they occur suddenly. Keeping to the service intervals is not a recommendation on this component but a condition.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Are the generator, air conditioning and stabilisers covered?
Yes, as permanently installed onboard equipment. What matters is reflecting their value in the sum insured; on larger yachts the onboard equipment accounts for a quarter of the value.

As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
