One-off and custom yard builds; cover, cost and conditions
Not every boat comes from a production series. One-off builds to an owner's own design, special constructions from small yards and boats that have been substantially altered in a refit are insurable like any other craft; the yard does not decide on insurability, but rather type, value, year of construction, output and cruising range. What works differently with a one-off build is the valuation.
For a one-off build there is no price list and no depreciation table. The value arises from the design, the material, the quality of the fit-out, the machinery and the equipment, and with carefully built boats it is considerably higher than a depreciated value calculation produces. We record an agreed value on the basis of a valuation report. Anyone who has built or converted a boat themselves should keep invoices, photographs from the building period and design documents: they are the proof of what is in the boat.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
How do I insure a one-off built boat?
Through an agreed value on the basis of a valuation report. Keep invoices, photographs from the building period and design documents, they prove the value that no price list shows.

Series by Werftbau (Einzel- und Sonderbau), with value and cover
Einzelbau nach Konstruktion is a motor yacht from Werftbau (custom and one-off build), built since 1950, and today changes hands at between €45,000 and €1,900,000.
Einzelbau Segelyacht is a sailing yacht from Werftbau (custom and one-off build), built since 1950, and today changes hands at between €45,000 and €2,400,000.
Yard conversion and refit is a motor yacht from Werftbau (custom and one-off build), built since 1960, and today changes hands at between €25,000 and €890,000.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
