Hello,
This is the first Owner's Letter. Once a month we write down what boat owners should know right now: what the season asks of you, what policy wordings say about it, and what is new on our site. Short, with links if you want more. October is about the last trip of the year and about laying up.
The delivery trip to winter storage
The run to the winter yard is often the longest trip of the year, with a half laid up boat, short days and cold water. Four kinds of clauses decide whether a loss on the way is covered. We have put them together.
Seasonal policy? Check the dates
Many seasonal policies only run from spring to autumn. Look at your schedule now: if the cover ends in October or November, the boat is not insured over the winter, ashore or afloat, unless you extend it to a full year.
Leaving the boat afloat
October brings the choice between the yard and the berth. If the boat stays in the water, read the clauses on ice and frost first. They are usually exclusions.
Ashore on stands
In February the yacht lies beside its stands. Whether that is a hull claim depends on the storage place, storm or accident, and how the stands were kept. What you can do about it while laying up is in the article.
Checklist to print
Engine, water, electrics, cover and security, plus the insurance check before laying up, ready to tick off.
New: the boating licence academy
All official exam questions for the German boating licence, each with an explanation, in a free trainer. Pass a full sheet without a single mistake by 31 March 2027 and you can enter our draw for three boating licence courses, up to 500 euros each, if you live in Germany or Austria.
Vote for your favourite harbour
Until 31 January 2027, owners and crews choose their favourite harbour from our berth directory, in five categories. One vote per category per day, no sign up.
Safe last trip and a quiet winter,
The NAMMERT team
