How the place works
The Gulf Stream runs north off the Florida coast at up to four knots, and with a northerly against it a short, steep sea builds quickly that makes the crossing to the Bahamas impossible. In a southerly the same passage is a walk.
What breaks there
Anyone crossing despite a northerly collects slamming damage: fittings, steering gear, interior. The cases almost always arise because a schedule was kept that the weather did not allow.
