AB Yachts is an Italian yard founded in 1992 with a clear focus from the outset: waterjet propulsion and advanced composite engineering. It belongs to Francesco Guidetti's FIPA Group. Viareggio is given as its home, while the boats are built in Massa on the Tuscan coast, in a yard shared with the sister brands Maiora and CBI Navi. The first models carried names such as Follia 55 and Follia 75. After that the yard switched to a plainer system in which the number stands for the length in feet, so the AB 58 grew into a family reaching well past a hundred feet. What gives an AB away is usually its drive: jets rather than propellers push it along.
Our model records list 14 designs, every one of them a motor yacht. The oldest entries are the AB Follia 55 from 1995 and the AB Follia 75 from 1996, both built into the early 2000s. From 2003 come the AB Yachts 58, 68 and 78 and the AB 110, from 2004 the AB Yachts 92 and the AB Yachts 140. The AB 88 ran from 2001 to 2007 and the AB 92 Fly from 2009 to 2019. The AB Yachts 116, 100 and 145 followed, and in 2018 the AB Yachts 80 joined the range. Lengths run from 17.4 metres for the AB Follia 55 to 44.6 metres for the AB Yachts 145. A waterjet boat rewards an owner who knows what sits behind the transom. Intake grilles collect weed and plastic, impellers and wear rings lose efficiency when they are scored, and the steering and reversing buckets need regular attention.
