ABD Aluminium Boats & Fabricators; cover, cost and conditions
ABD Aluminum Boats & Fabricators is based in North Vancouver, British Columbia. Alan Dawson and Burton Drody founded it in 1987 on the site of the former Bel-Aire Shipyard and simply carried on Bel-Aire's hull numbers from 303 onwards. The yard works in aluminium and mostly for working use: fishing boats, passenger vessels, tugs and workboats, with some yachts and recreational craft alongside. Its most widely reported build is the Tsimshian Storm, a 21 metre crewboat and passenger ferry designed by Robert Allan Ltd. and delivered in 2003 to a ferry service in Prince Rupert, with room for 45 people. Explorathor II followed in 2010 for Vancouver Whale Watch, and two pilot launches in 2011.
Our model records list three ABD types, all filed as motor yachts although they are really working and passenger boats. Each is listed from the 2018 build year and reaches into the most recent years. The smallest is the Whale Watcher at 14.95 metres, just short of 15. The Pilot Boats measure 19.9 metres, and the Tsimshian Storm, at 21.3 metres, is the longest entry. The whole range therefore sits between 15 and just over 21 metres with no small leisure type at all. The names describe jobs rather than series models: putting pilots aboard ships, watching whales and carrying people along the coast.
Aluminium suits hard working boats: it is light, strong and needs no antifouling on the topsides, but it reacts badly to stray currents and mixed metals. On a former commercial hull, check the anodes, the shore power installation and every place where stainless steel fittings meet the plating. Welds around engine beds and the bow deserve a close look, because pilot boats in particular come alongside ships in any weather. Engine hours on a working boat are often high, so service records matter. Conversions to private use are common, and the quality of the conversion varies from boat to boat.
