Worth knowing
Adaptive Composites Llc; cover, cost and conditions
Adaptive Composites builds the Airship range of rigid inflatables in Vermilion, Ohio, on the shore of Lake Erie. The people behind the brand come from offshore racing: Jim Dyke, Steve Neeley and Dominic Visconsi Jr. raced high-performance catamarans, and after some twenty years of competition their team turned to building RIBs, starting Airship in 2005. The boats are composite through and through. Hulls are vacuum-infused in vinylester around a Divinycell foam core, and the tubes are made of Hypalon. On the flagship 340, a deep-V hull with two steps carries a pair of outboards. With lengths from just under nine to just over ten metres, Airships sit at the large end of their kind.
Our model records list four designs, all classed as rigid inflatables and all with build years from 2018. Every one of them runs into the most recent build years, so the range is still in production. The smallest is the Airship 288 at 8.73 metres, followed by the 300 DS at 9.14 metres and the 310 at 9.44 metres. The largest is the 340 at 10.35 metres. The numbers read as feet and inches: 288 means 28 feet 8 inches, 300 an even 30 feet, 340 a full 34 feet. It is a tight, consistent range, with only about one and a half metres between the smallest and the largest model.
A RIB of this size is a serious powerboat, and a used one should be checked like one. Hypalon tubes stand up well to sunlight, yet seams, valves and the joint between tube and hull deserve a close look, as do the rubbing strakes. On the stepped hull of the 340, inspect the steps and the keel line for impact damage, since a cored laminate can hide moisture behind a small crack. Twin outboards mean twice the engine history: ask for service records and compression figures for both, and check the transom and engine mounts. A boat that has spent its life on the Great Lakes has lived in fresh water, which is gentler on fittings than salt.
