Honwave (Honda Marine); cover, cost and conditions

Honwave is the inflatable boat range from Honda Marine and covers the segment between two and four metres, tenders, fishing boats and entry-level boats, mostly with an aluminium or slatted floor and a Honda outboard between 5 and 30 hp. In insurance terms this combination is the least complicated case in water sports: low value, manageable engine output, transport on a trailer or in the boot of a car.

Below 15 hp there is no licence requirement, from 3 hp the marking requirement remains. Third-party liability is nevertheless the part that counts: even a boat with 10 hp can cause personal injury, and the size of such a claim does not depend on the value of the boat. For around forty euros a year it is the most effective part of the policy, and in many waters proof of it is a precondition for use anyway.

On these boats hull insurance is worthwhile above all because of the engine and because of theft. A Honda outboard is easy to resell and correspondingly at risk; our full hull cover covers the theft of the engine alone from the boat. On the boat itself the tube is insured against external damage, not against ageing. Store it dry and depressurised over the winter, then the adhesive will last longer than the policy.

Questions and answers

Frequent questions

Do I need a licence for 10 hp?

No, not for Honwave either: the licence requirement starts at 15 hp (11.03 kW),

on the Rhine as early as 5 hp.

The marking requirement applies from 3 hp.

Is hull insurance worthwhile on a small inflatable boat?

For Honwave: Usually because of the engine:

it is the most expensive part and the most frequently stolen item.

The full hull cover covers the theft of the engine alone.

Required inland and at sea from 15 hp (11.03 kW); below that, none.

Registration

Registration from 3 hp; carry the boat certificate on maritime shipping routes.

Waters

Inland lakes, the coast and the Wadden Sea, mind the tide tables and the fairway.

Equipment

Lifejackets, paddles, pump, repair kit, anchor gear and signalling equipment.

Cruising range

RIBs close to the coast; check air pressure before every trip and after temperature swings.

Weather

From Beaufort 4 the ride turns hard, and offshore wind sharply raises the risk of drifting.

General guidance, not a complete account;

what governs are the rules of the waters you are on and the manual of your Honwave.

Current wind force and direction for your waters are shown on the Home.

What this means for the cover

As the Honwave T20 / T24 and Honwave T25 / T32 by Honwave series are still in production,

parts are available and repairs are predictable.

Still, set the value at replacement cost, including sails, rigging or gear you bought later.

As the Honwave T38 / T38 IE, Honwave T35 / T40,

Honwave T 35 / T 40 AE by Honwave and 2 more series are still in production,

parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Honwave MS 380 / MX 400 AL by Honwave series the market value and the replacement cost

often differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Honwave T20 / T24, Honwave T25 / T32 by Honwave series:

Even without an engine the rule holds: a tear from impact or vandalism is covered,

UV ageing is wear.

For the Honwave T38 / T38 IE, Honwave T35 / T40,

Honwave T 35 / T 40 AE by Honwave and further series: On an inflatable the cause decides,

not the damage: a tear from impact is covered, porous fabric after years in the sun is not.

The outboard belongs in the policy with its serial number.
