Worth knowing
Air Solid Inc; cover, cost and conditions
Air Solid is a builder from the Canadian province of Quebec with its own take on the rigid inflatable. The hull is welded marine aluminium, and the float is not glued either: it is welded from a polyurethane composite fabric. According to a Canadian boating magazine, the company gives ten years of warranty on the hull and ten on the float. The floats were developed for working service with police, fire crews and the coast guard, and the boats have since found private owners too. What sets an Airsolid apart is exactly that pairing of an aluminium hull with a welded polyurethane tube, a combination more often seen on patrol craft than on leisure boats.
Our model records list three designs, all of them RIBs: the Airsolid 15, the Airsolid 20 and the Airsolid 27. The smallest measures 3.8 metres, short enough to serve as a tender, the middle one six metres and the largest 7.9 metres. All three start with build year 2018 and continue into the most recent build years, so the range is in current production. The trade press describes the Airsolid 27 as suited to rough work and commercial use as well. Three sizes keep the line-up compact while spanning everything from a trailer boat to a hull for open water.
Welded aluminium asks for its own kind of care. Where stainless fittings, a steel trailer or a bronze through-hull meet the hull, galvanic corrosion can start, so anodes and isolation deserve a look every season. Welded seams are tough but should be checked for hairline cracks after hard use. The polyurethane float is built to shrug off abrasion; even so, chafe points at the bow and along a quay are worth inspecting. On a used boat, look at the outboard hours and the transom bracket, check that the console wiring is dry and see whether the boat has spent its life in fresh or salt water. Ex-service boats may have seen long hours.
