Airfoil; cover, cost and conditions
Airfoil is a motor yacht name from the late eighties and early nineties, with model names that sound closer to aviation than to boatbuilding: AFI-Sport-Flyer, Skimmerfoil, Flairbus, Patrol Fly. In the AFI-Sport-Flyer models the number gives the length in metres, so the AFI-Sport-Flyer 8 measures 8.3 metres. Production ended long ago, and little has been published about how the boats were built.
Our model records hold eight Airfoil designs, seven motor yachts and one motorboat, the 8.3 metre AFI-Sport-Flyer 8. The motor yachts are the AFI-Sport-Flyer 11 and 14, the Airfoil VIII-2 and VIII-3, the Skimmerfoil, the Patrol Fly and the Flairbus. Build years run from 1986 to 1996. Three models measure eleven metres and three fourteen metres, with the 19.8 metre Flairbus at the top of the range.
Every Airfoil is now over thirty years old and unique in its condition. Spare parts for unusual designs can be hard to find, so a careful owner keeps records of engines, drawings and past repairs. A winter on land under a roof and a fresh look at the wiring and fuel lines before launch matter more here than on a common series yacht. Owners of such rare boats often know each other, and their notes on past repairs are worth asking for.
