Akerboom is a Leiden name in Dutch shipbuilding. By its own account the company's history runs from cargo ships to yachts, and a Dutch ship broker lists Akerboom as a builder of both luxury yachts and working vessels. Since 1986 it has belonged to the Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw group, whose home is Aalsmeer. Today the Leiden works concentrates on equipment for large yachts: hatches, doors, cranes, platforms, gangways and boarding ladders, along with propeller shaft installations. Assembly happens at the home site and installation at finishing yards in the Netherlands, with Feadship, part of the same group, as the main customer. The yachts in our records date from the years when the Akerboom brothers still built hulls for private owners.

Our model records hold three designs from 1965 to 1978, two motor yachts and one sailing yacht. The Flachdeck-Kreuzer is listed from 1965 to 1975 and, at 14.48 metres, is the longest boat of the brand. The Kutterjacht 45, the only sailing yacht, runs from 1965 to 1972 and measures 13.73 metres. The Sedan Motorcruiser arrived in 1967, is listed until 1978 and is the shortest of the three at 12.5 metres. None of them reaches into recent build years, so every Akerboom on this list is close to fifty years old or older. All three are over twelve metres; there are no small boats in the records.

A Dutch yacht of the sixties or seventies was usually built to last, but half a century leaves marks. Ask whether the hull is steel or wood and get a surveyor to check plating thickness or planking and fastenings. Engines on boats of this age have often been replaced, so a record of the repowering and of the shaft and stern gear is valuable. On the Kutterjacht 45, look closely at the mast step, chainplates and standing rigging. Wiring is a frequent weak point on older yachts and may need renewal. Many of these boats have spent their lives on Dutch inland waters and sheltered coasts, which tends to be kinder to hull and engine than years offshore.
