Worth knowing
Alaska Motor Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Alaska Motor Yachts is a range of sedan and flybridge cruisers developed from the ground up by Leigh-Smith Yachts in Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast. The boats were designed for the cruising grounds of Australia's east coast and are sold only there. Hulls are made of hand laid fibreglass, and moulding alone takes about three months. An Alaska has the look of a proper passagemaker: a high bow, a sheltered saloon with big windows, wide side decks and a cockpit fit for fishing and swimming. The number gives roughly the length in feet.
Our model records list 17 Alaska designs, all motor yachts. The Alaska 45 Sedan Cruiser goes back furthest, to 2003, and eight lines are recorded into the most recent years, among them the 43, 44, 47, 49, 55 and 59 Sedans. By layout there are nine sedans, four flybridge models, the 49 Yachtfisher, two pilothouse models and the Alaska 53. Lengths run from 13.1 metres (43 Sedan) to 18.3 metres (55 Sedan).
An Alaska is built for living aboard on long coastal runs, from weekend island trips to weeks along the reef. Hand laid hulls are solid, but the gelcoat, stainless fittings and air conditioning need regular care in tropical sun and salt air. Most boats live on a marina berth with shore power, and the big cockpit makes the swim platform and fishing gear part of daily life on board.
