Aluqa is a Dutch yard that designs and builds lightweight aluminium boats for a highly exclusive segment. The Abalone models are custom made and hand built in the company's own facility in the Netherlands, combining Dutch design with a good deal of engineering in the details. One signature is the anchor system the team developed itself: the anchor folds away and stays hidden while it is not needed. The Abalone 28 was conceived as a tender for larger yachts and was named Motor Yacht of the Year at the 2016 HISWA show. In 2017 Aluqa took its aluminium tenders to the Cannes Yachting Festival for their international debut, and the Abalone 48 was developed as an open or walkaround boat for service around the Balearic Islands.
Our model records list four designs, all filed as motor yachts: the Abalone 24, 28, 40 and 48. The number gives the rough length in feet. The Abalone 24 measures 7.2 metres, the 28 comes to 8.5 metres, the 40 to 12 metres and the 48 to 13.25 metres. The 28 is the earliest entry, listed from build year 2014, while the other three start in 2015. All four continue into the most recent build years. According to the builder, the Abalone 28 has a beam of 2.65 metres, weighs about 2,500 kilograms and reaches around 70 kilometres per hour.
Aluminium keeps weight down, which is exactly what a tender needs, but it asks for attention to galvanic corrosion. Anodes should be checked every season, stainless fittings need proper isolation from the hull, and the electrical system should be free of stray currents, particularly when the boat lies next to a larger yacht in a busy marina. Painted or coated surfaces want inspection for chips that let salt reach the metal. The folding anchor mechanism has moving parts that benefit from rinsing and greasing. On a used Abalone, ask how it was used: a tender lifted in and out of a yacht's garage leads a different life from a boat that spent its summers ferrying guests along the Balearic coast.
