American Marine PTE Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions

American Marine builds the yachts of the Grand Banks brand. Robert J. Newton founded the house in 1956 and ran a yard with his sons on Junk Bay in Hong Kong, where heavy sailing boats and large motor yachts were built at first. In 1963 the first boat under the Grand Banks name was launched, the GB 36. Two years later the base moved to Jurong in Singapore, where building continues; from 1973 the hulls were laid up there in fibreglass instead of timber. You recognise these yachts by the semi displacement hull, the tall stem, the walkaround side deck and the generous teak.

Our model records list 52 American Marine models, 51 of them motor yachts and one a sailing yacht. Recorded build years run from 1965 to 2008. Fifty two series are recorded: the Classic in 36, 42 and 46, the Europa in 42, 46 and 52, also as AC, the Eastbay as Express, Hardtop Express, Flybridge and Sedan Flybridge in 38, 43, 47, 49 and 54, and the Grand Banks 42 Motoryacht. From the early years come the Alaskan models 45, 46, 49, 53 and 55 and the Admiralty Fifty. Lengths run from 9.3 to 20.2 metres, half the models between 11.6 and 15.4 metres.

Teak is what defines these yachts. On the older models the decks, superstructures and entire interiors are timber, and timber ages differently from the hull beneath it: leaking deck fittings, dried out seams and water in a core are the recurring themes. All of that happens slowly rather than in one event, which is exactly what separates it from a storm, a sinking or a collision.
