American Metalcraft Marine; cover, cost and conditions
American Metalcraft Marine is a name from the history of MetalCraft Marine, a Canadian yard in Kingston, Ontario, where Lake Ontario drains into the St. Lawrence. In 1987 Tom Wroe and Monty Smith bought the company they worked for, the struggling Kingston Aluminum Yachts, and turned it towards patrol and work boats. Their first powerboat was the Kingston 24, drawn by Wroe. The yard now builds fireboats, patrol boats, workboats and research vessels in aluminium. To reach the American market it formed a partnership in 2007 with a small yard in Clayton, New York. That operation started out as American MetalCraft Marine, became MetalCraft Marine U.S. in 2009 and later moved to Cape Vincent. Model names hint at the job: the SAR in Kingston 40 SAR stands for search and rescue.
Our model records list twelve designs, every one of them starting in 2018 and every one still running into the most recent build years. Five are rigid inflatables, four are motor yachts and three are motorboats. The Interceptor range takes in the 9M, 10M, 11M and 12M plus the Interceptor 4344. The Kingston range starts with the Kingston 26 RIB and Kingston 32 RIB, moves on to the Kingston 36 and Kingston 40 SAR and ends with the Kingston 54. The Kingfisher 28 and 29 complete the list. The shortest boat is the Kingfisher 28 at 8.53 metres, the longest the Kingston 54 at 16.46 metres. Five designs stay under ten metres and four measure more than twelve. Nothing in the list is shorter than eight and a half metres.
Aluminium hulls need a different kind of attention from glassfibre. Galvanic corrosion is the main enemy, so sacrificial anodes should be checked and replaced regularly, and any stainless fittings or copper based antifouling near the hull deserve a careful look. On a used boat, look at the welds around the transom, the engine mounts and the spray rails, and ask for engine hours and service records. Boats built for patrol or rescue work are often run hard and fitted with a lot of electronics, searchlights and towing gear, so a survey should include the electrical system. A rigid inflatable also needs its tube checked for chafe and leaks along the seams.
