Worth knowing
Aquafibre; cover, cost and conditions
Aquafibre was a boatbuilder in Rackheath, Norfolk, turning out craft for the Norfolk Broads from the late 1960s. Early on it produced Elysian hulls topped with hand-built wooden superstructures, later boats entirely in glassfibre. Much of the output was bare shells, fitted out by yards such as Brooms of Brundall and Bristercraft at Wroxham, so the same boat often carries a different badge. A typical Aquafibre has a low air draft, with a sliding canopy that lowers to clear the bridges of the Broads. A second strand came from sailing, as Aquafibre bought the first set of moulds for the S&S 34. The company stopped trading in 2009.
Our model records list three designs from two very different worlds. Two are motor yachts: the Aquafibre 35 at 10.7 metres, listed from 1976 to 1982, and the Charter 390 at 11.9 metres, built from 2002 to 2008 in the last years of the yard. The third is the S&S 34 sailing yacht, 10.2 metres long and listed from 1969 to 1988. None runs into recent build years, and all three sit between just over ten and just under twelve metres. Olin Stephens drew the S&S 34 in 1968, and it was built both in Britain and in Australia; Edward Heath won the 1969 Sydney to Hobart race in one, Morning Cloud.
A Broads cruiser and an offshore sloop age in different ways. On an Aquafibre motor cruiser, look at the sliding canopy, its runners and seals, and at the inboard engine and its mounts, and ask for the service history. Because many shells were fitted out by other yards, the paperwork may name the outfitter rather than Aquafibre, so it pays to trace where a boat came from. An S&S 34 calls for checks on the skeg-hung rudder, the keel joint and the standing rigging, and on the deck fittings that carry the loads of a large overlapping headsail.

Series by Aquafibre, build years and cover
Charter 390 is a motor yacht from Aquafibre, built from 2002 to 2008.
S&S 34 is a sailing yacht from Aquafibre, built from 1969 to 1988.
Aquafibre 35 is a motor yacht from Aquafibre, built from 1976 to 1982.
For the Charter 390 by Aquafibre series the market value and the replacement cost often differ
widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the S&S 34 and Aquafibre 35 by Aquafibre series there is no list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Charter 390, Aquafibre 35 by Aquafibre series:
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
For the S&S 34 by Aquafibre series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
