Aresa; cover, cost and conditions
Aresa stands for Astilleros Reunidos S.A., a Spanish yard formed in 1966 when Astilleros Gallart and Astilleros Ibiza joined forces. It started out in Mataró and later moved to Arenys de Mar near Barcelona, where it still works today. The yard builds customs patrol boats, fishing vessels and a line of motor yachts that draws on its experience with professional hulls. Between 1968 and 1972 Aresa worked with the Italian yard Baglietto, and a subsidiary called Tecnaresa was set up to design and develop new models. That Italian influence shows clearly in the yachts of the seventies, most of all in the Aresa 16.
Our model records list three designs, all motor yachts. The Aresa 16 at 16 metres is both the largest and the oldest, listed from 1976 to 1984. The Aresa 13 XM at 12.7 metres follows from 1981 and the Aresa 13 fast at 12.5 metres from 1982, both running until 1989. None reaches into recent build years, so every Aresa on the market today is a used boat. The two 13s form a pair of almost the same size, told apart by the suffix in the name, while the 16 sits a size class above them. The Aresa 16 was built in glassfibre.
A motor yacht built between the mid seventies and 1989 rewards a patient inspection. Engines and gearboxes have often been rebuilt or replaced, so the hours, the service records and the state of the shafts, seals and engine beds matter more than the build year. Fuel and water tanks of that age are worth checking for corrosion and leaks. On the hull, look for osmosis blisters and examine the deck joint and the window seals, which take years of sun. A survey before purchase is the sensible first step, and an owner who can show what was renewed and when makes the decision much easier.
