Atlanta Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Atlanta is a British range of cabin cruisers from the eighties and nineties. The boats came from Fibreglass Construction of Burnley, which took up the Atlanta range after the demise of Norman Cruisers at Shaw in Lancashire. For a short spell the Atlanta 27 was also built by Practical Marine of Blackheath in the West Midlands. Production ran roughly from 1985 to 1995. They are small glassfibre cabin cruisers; the 27 typically sleeps four and was offered with Volvo Penta engines in petrol or diesel form.
Our model records list three designs, all classed as motor yachts. The Atlanta 27 SE at 8.1 metres and the Atlanta 32 at 9.8 metres both start with build year 1985, and the Atlanta 24 at 7.3 metres follows in 1986. The 32 is listed until 1992, the 24 until 1993 and the 27 SE until 1996, which makes it the longest running line. None reaches into recent build years, so even the youngest boats are around thirty years old. Just under two and a half metres separate the smallest from the largest, and the names roughly follow the length in feet: 24, 27 and 32.
A cruiser of this age is judged by its engine and its history more than by its badge. Check whether the original Volvo Penta unit has been replaced, look at the outdrive bellows where fitted, and ask for service records. Petrol and diesel versions need different checks on the fuel system, so it helps to know which one a boat carries. On the hull, look for osmosis and gelcoat crazing, and on deck for leaking window frames and soft spots around fittings. Canopies and upholstery are often due for renewal on boats of this age, which is worth budgeting for in time.
