Atlantis was born from an acquisition. In 2001 the Italian Azimut-Benetti Group bought the Gobbi yard, and its series production became the base of a new brand for open sports yachts. For a while the boats carried both names, as with the Gobbi 47 Atlantis, before Gobbi was dropped. Atlantis made its official debut in autumn 2002 at the Genoa boat show with the 42. The brand was meant as the entry point to the group, with sports cruisers of ten to fifteen metres for day trips and weekends. In 2013 Atlantis became a line within Azimut. The boats are recognisable by a low, stretched profile with a large sunpad, an open or hardtop cockpit and the accommodation below deck rather than a saloon on deck level.

Our model records list 21 designs, all of them motor yachts. The oldest entry is the Atlantis 42 from 2000 onwards, the newest the Atlantis 51, recorded until 2022; no line reaches the most recent build years. Besides the numbered models from the 34 to the 58 there is the SC EVO series with the 315, 345 and 425, plus the Verve 36. The 50 appears in four versions: the Atlantis 50, 50 Coupe, 50 Open and 50X4. The smallest designs, the Atlantis 34 and the 315 SC EVO, measure 10.3 metres, the Atlantis 58 at the top 19.1 metres. Fifteen designs are twelve metres or longer, and eight reach 15 metres or more.

These are Mediterranean boats: fast passages between anchorages, long days at a buoy, crowded marinas in August. On a used Atlantis, check the stern drives or shaft lines, the engine hours against the age of the boat, and the hardtop and sunroof seals, which can leak after years in strong sun. Teak decks and cockpit upholstery age quickly in that climate and are costly to renew. Look closely at the gelcoat around cleats and fenders, where tight berthing leaves its marks. A sea trial at full speed tells a lot about how the engines have been treated.
