Babro builds steel motor yachts in the Netherlands and has been working for more than four decades. Each yacht is built to its buyer's wishes, with design and construction kept in house. The range falls into several lines: Kruiser, Beluga and Classic for the traditional shape, Newline for the more modern drawing and Tridente for the larger models, which come with an aft cabin as well as an open cockpit. You recognise the yachts by the curved steel hull with its soft sheer, the solid bulwark and the wheelhouse with its large upright windows.

Our model records list 38 Babro models, all of them motor yachts. Build years start in 1985 and run into current production. Thirty eight series are recorded: the Classic 1150 XL, 1260, 1400 and 1500; the Newline 1290 and 1500; the Tridente 43 and 1300; the Beluga as AK 1000 and 1250 and as OK 1100 and 1250; and the Kruiser AK 1120, 1240, 1340 and 1450. From earlier years come the Babro-Kotter 1300 and the numbered models 950, 1020, 11.20 GSOK, 11.50 OK and 13.40 AK. The number gives the length in centimetres, so a Beluga OK 1250 measures around 12.5 metres. Lengths run from 10.1 to 17.7 metres, half the models between 11.2 and 13.4 metres.

Two things follow from a yard that builds each boat to order. The model name says less about a particular yacht than it would on a production line, because the fitting out differs from hull to hull. And steel rules the rest: it rusts where its protection is broken, by preference where nobody looks, so plate thickness readings tell more than a year of build does.
