Back Cove Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Back Cove Yachts was set up in 2003 in Rockland on the coast of Maine, as a sister company of Sabre Yachts. The idea was a smaller, economical cruising boat in the Downeast style: the lines of the Maine lobster boat combined with the comfort of a yacht and a single diesel engine. The first model was the Back Cove 29, and the boats are still built in Rockland. The look is pure New England: a tall, steep bow, a long cabin top with a sheltered helm and an open cockpit behind it, a style that grew out of the working boats of the Gulf of Maine.
Our model records hold ten Back Cove designs, all listed as motor yachts. Lengths run from 9.76 metres for the Back Cove 30 to 14.17 metres for the Back Cove 41. The earliest entries are the Back Cove 33 and the Back Cove 37, both from 2006. Alongside the 30, 32, 33, 34, 37 and 41 there are two models with the O suffix, the Back Cove 34 O and the Back Cove 39 O, plus the Back Cove 372 and the Back Cove Downeast 37. Four designs reach into the most recent build years: the 34 O, 39 O, 41 and 372. The 32, the 37 and the Downeast 37 are recorded until 2024, and the others end between 2017 and 2022.
A single diesel makes ownership straightforward, but it also means a great deal rests on one engine. On a used Back Cove, ask for the engine service history and check the shaft, the cutless bearing and the propeller. Look at the bow thruster too, since boats of this size often rely on it for berthing. Many Downeast hulls carry a keel that protects the running gear; inspect its forward edge for grounding marks. Varnished trim shows quickly how attentive the previous owner was. Boats brought over from the United States need their electrical system checked against European shore power before the first season.
