Beelitz is a family name that three generations of German boatbuilders shared, each of them called Robert. The first Robert Beelitz started out in 1883 on the Großer Wannsee in Berlin, hiring out rowing boats and canoes and soon repairing them too. His son opened his own yard in Potsdam in 1928, building canoes, dinghies and keelboats. After a fire in 1943 the business moved to Alt Töplitz, in 1958 to West Berlin and in 1967 to the Fehmarnsund on the Baltic, where the grandson ran it on his own from 1982. The yard was sold in 2007. Beelitz built only in wood, using mahogany, larch and plywood, carvel planked over oak frames, and the family refused to work with glassfibre.

Our model records hold two Beelitz designs, a motorboat and a motor yacht built three decades apart. The Havel is listed from 1966 to 1972 and measures 5.5 metres. It belongs to the family of aft-deck launches for which the yard became known in Berlin, alongside the fast express saloons named Travemünde, Timmendorf and Westerland. The Beelitz 29 GS is a motor yacht of 8.87 metres, listed from 1997 to 2003, from the Fehmarn years when the yard still turned out one of its last wooden motor yachts in 2002. Neither line reaches the most recent build years, so every Beelitz afloat today is a boat with a past.

A carvel planked hull asks for steady attention. Varnish and paint protect the mahogany, and a boat that dries out over a long spell ashore may weep at the seams until the planks take up again. Good ventilation under the tarpaulin and inside the cabin keeps rot away from the oak frames. Anyone looking at a used Beelitz should check the frames, the fastenings and the wood around the stern tube and the deck fittings, ideally with a surveyor who knows traditional construction. Many of these boats still cruise the Havel and the lakes of Brandenburg, often in the hands of owners who have kept them for years.
